As an academic expert, I am thrilled to share the remarkable success of our summer program that blended education with immersive experiences at St. Augustine and Orlando. This 13-day journey took our students on an extraordinary learning adventure, where the classroom extended beyond the traditional walls and embraced the magic of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) in captivating ways.
During the first 7 days of the program, our students had the privilege of learning at St. Augustine-Florida, from the Florida Film Academy’s experts in Project Design and also from the WebDesign Disney Codeillusion experts. Here, they delved into the world of coding and web design, equipping themselves with the skills needed to create their very own video game franchise. The engaging and hands-on sessions enabled them to unleash their creativity and problem-solving abilities, instilling a passion for technology and the limitless possibilities it offers.
The journey continued as we ventured into Orlando, where the next 5 days brought an abundance of STEAM learning opportunities at Universal Studios. At the heart of our educational expedition were two thrilling rides – “Transformers Roll Out” and “Kongtrol Panel.” Little did our students know that these exhilarating experiences were carefully designed to encompass crucial STEAM principles.
Science: The rides “Transformers Roll Out” and “Kongtrol Panel” not only offered heart-pounding excitement but also served as a conduit for scientific exploration. As our students engaged with the motion and physics of the rides, they experienced firsthand how scientific principles come to life in action-packed settings. The interactive learning experiences made scientific concepts tangible and exciting, leaving our young minds awe-inspired by the wonders of science.
Technology: The immersive nature of the rides showcased cutting-edge technology at its finest. Students were mesmerized by the state-of-the-art simulators, 3D effects, and animatronics that brought these rides to life. Witnessing the convergence of technology and entertainment broadened their horizons, igniting their curiosity for future technological innovations and how they can contribute to this ever-evolving field.
Engineering: Behind the scenes of these captivating rides lies a world of engineering marvels. Our students gained a profound appreciation for the meticulous design and engineering efforts that ensure the smooth functioning and safety of such attractions. Understanding the intricate processes of ride construction and mechanics fostered a sense of wonder and inspired some to pursue careers in engineering and design.
Arts: At Universal Studios, creativity and artistry are woven into every aspect, from captivating set designs to lifelike character animations. Our students were immersed in the world of visual storytelling, understanding how arts play a pivotal role in crafting unforgettable experiences. The incorporation of artistic elements in their video game franchise projects infused their creations with unique and engaging narratives.
Mathematics: The seemingly heart-stopping motions and precision of the rides were underpinned by calculations and mathematical concepts such as cartesian planes where students were astounded to discover how mathematics plays a significant role in ensuring the thrills are safely calibrated. By experiencing the application of mathematics in real-world scenarios, they developed a newfound appreciation for the relevance and practicality of mathematical concepts.
Beyond the theme park adventures, our program also encompassed a visit to NASA’s Kennedy Space Center, where science learning reached new heights as our students explored the wonders of space and space technology. Additionally, a day of fun and enchantment awaited at Magic Kingdom, where imagination blended harmoniously with learning.
This summer program exemplified how reimagining the classroom can elevate education to unparalleled heights. By embracing immersive experiences and integrating the five areas of STEAM, we transformed learning into an exhilarating adventure. As the Academic Manager for Coding Education, I am elated to witness the profound impact this program had on our students’ thirst for knowledge and their eagerness to pursue STEAM-related fields in the future. Through such educational escapades, we strive to nurture the innovators, creators, and critical thinkers of tomorrow, empowered to make a difference in the world through the magic of STEAM.
